IMF loan to help support economy: Tarin
KARACHI: The first tranche of the IMF loan amounting to Rs3.5 billion will help support the economy of the country, said Advisor to Prime Minister for Finance Shaukat Tarin here on Friday. Talking to media on his arrival here, he reiterated the government’s resolve to continue taking necessary measures for putting the country’s ailing economy back to its feet. “The IMF’s loan will improve the country’s economic condition,” the Advisor said optimistically.

European, Asian markets rebound despite US losses
LONDON: European and Asian stock markets rebounded Friday as expectations of a recovery on Wall Street prompted investors to scoop up battered financial and energy shares. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 42.78 points, or 1.1 percent, at 3,917.77, while Germany’’s DAX was 46.59 points, or 1.1 percent, higher at 4,266.79.

SBP issues over Rs23 bln T-Bills
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Friday mopped up Rs23.70 billion at 6.4 per cent interest for one day by issuing treasury bills.

Oil prices plunge below 50 dollars per barrel
NEWYORK: Oil prices crashed below 50 dollars a barrel on Thursday as plunging equities and weak US data sparked fresh fears that a worldwide recession would ravage energy demand. In New York, light sweet crude for delivery in December plunged 4.00 dollars a barrel to close at 49.62. The December contract expired at the close after hitting an intraday low of 48.64 dollars, a level last seen in May 2005

iPhone Update Soups Up Street Smarts, Stabilizes Safari
Apple has released a new software update for the iPhone, bringing users more than a dozen new features and fixes. Among them is the “I-want-that-too” Google Street View maps feature that was first available on BlackBerry and Java-enabled phones. “Apple has been releasing major updates to iPhone OS every few months,” Raven Zachary, founder of iPhoneDevCamp and a contributing analyst for The 451 Group, told MacNewsWorld.

Microsoft sought to bring a quick end Thursday to the lawsuit that has produced a steady flow of sometimes embarrassing internal e-mails about Windows Vista, a product whose reputation in the marketplace was already tarnished before it launched nearly two years ago. The company asked a federal judge in Seattle to dismiss the remaining claims in the class-action suit brought by PC buyers challenging its “Vista Capable” marketing program as deceptive, and to decertify the class.
